Genealogy and pedigree charts…

I had to give up and send this over to my brother. He claim to know it all. At lest I could follow my grandmother on my mother`s side:) It is weird and sad that I know so little about my family since my mother knew so much and loved to talk about it. I should be able to find photos of the relatives on my mother`s side but I am not so sure about my father`s family.

I have this great photo of my grandparents and their children…

…And I have one from earlier years…

I remember my parents talking all the happy gatherings in the family home back in the days. Big days celebrated. Singing and dancing. Men drank while women scolded. Teasing and some bickering between siblings and in-laws. Nightly adventures at sea. Hard work. Poor schooling. Herring and lamb served throughout the week. That is about all.

Funny thing. I had to search through my mother`s bible to find the date of their death and I have to admit that it is weird to see the obituaries. Man and wife, brother and brother – with different family name…

I know why.

When I was a little girl there was a language debate in Norway. We had to choose the dialect children should be taught in. In Norway we have two very similar written language. There was a small war and because of this my family does not have the same family name.
But it does not explain the obituaries. Maybe it says more about who ordered the ad. My father was certainly not participating in the planning of his mother’s funeral. He was not particularly fond of his mother. I wish I knew why but when I look at all the same age kids as it is easy to understand that it would be easy to fall out with mom. And if there is one thing I have from my father, it is the ability to hold grudges – for a long time.

There I have a family history I can tell:)

That is a fantastic photo of your grandparents with their children! And how fortunate to have those old obituaries. Great job pulling these bits of family history together!!! I haven’t even started on my Family History chart, but my sister gave me some information a few years ago that should help fill it in. Not sure how well I will fair with photos though.
