Celebrating Christmas in a hurricane

Bad weather is one thing – a hurricane is a total different kind of weather…

We knew it was heading our way…

…and we knew it could turn into a hurricane. Already early in the day we could feel the strength on the Atlantic Road…

Later in the evening the road was closed for traffic. All the ferries in the area were stopped and the power went out all over the district. We all gathered at grandma`s place early in the evening. Just in time before the we lost the power…

The power is out. It is way past their bedtime. No TV, no radio signals and no telephone signals. But – we had a fire going, we had candles and food. She was afraid of the storm so we left her at grandma`s when we decided it was okay to go home believing that the weather was worse here at home. And it was worse and later we could not get back to grandma because the road was blocked by trees.

After midnight the worst was done and we had the power back on and we could go to sleep. We escaped the worst damage…

The old barn is stilling there and as far as we can say this morning only one part is missing and that part did not go far…

We lost one bush in the garden and that is okay…

Not everyone was so lucky. Still there are many who is out of power and there are a lot of damage done. I have made plans to go home to Bud early today because later this evening another storm is coming in…

…and I don`t know how last nights hurricane hit my place. I do know that it was worse than here. My nephew left home early this morning to asses the damage done on the halibut farm. He knew it was bad but not how bad. Thankfully we still celebrate Christmas so we have one day to clean up the mess. Tomorrow is another day at work for many of us.

I guess it wasn’t the best Christmas weather, but I’m glad everyone is safe and sound.
